At Takoma Bicycle we've got a car rack for every car - from SUVs to sedans - and for every bike - from kids to mountain to road to all of the above. Read on about the pros and cons of different types of car racks!
Roof Racks
Roof racks are the most versatile type of rack, and also one of the most secure and stable types of racks. When using a roof rack, you still have easy access to all doors, trunk and hitch. However, you have to be ready to do substantial hoisting to get your bike up on the rack. You're also going to add more wind resistance to your vehicle, and if you're going to places with low clearance you may run into trouble.
Trunk Racks
Trunk racks are usually one of the most affordable car racks, and are easy to load bikes onto. They can usually be easily transferred between cars. A trunk rack is a good bet for someone looking for occasional use. However, if used frequently it may become frustrating because of how it impacts access to the trunk. Bikes also have a chance of swaying and contacting each other on a trunk rack.
Hitch Racks
Hitch racks are usually easy to install, and bikes are easy to load and access. Depending on the type of hitch rack, you may still have access to the rear door. This is a good rack to use if you're frequently transporting your bike. However, advanced models can be expensive, while basic models are going to impede access to the rear cargo area.
